We are back in our Low Country home as the summer really turns hot hot hot.. After nearly two weeks away, some of that on the road, I was worried about the state I would find our small property in as the summer heat and harsh sun is a big factor.
Without human intervention, the eugenia topiaries baked and died. But there were some nice surprises. Look who is about to bloom for the first time!
Even in the early morning, the sun that makes it’s way through the sheltering trees is strong.
Not all blossoms can take it when the water supply dwindles.
This year I planted the tomatoes early, and the crop was abundant because the sun was strong and there was some good rain. It is just about the end of the tomatoes; once the temperature rises above 85, the tomato plant won’t set bud.
Sometimes we interfere with Nature too much. She makes a beautiful landscape on her own.
Hope you are having a happily hot, hot summer!
Jayne,
Our summer hasn’t been too hot yet. I’m sure it will come and usually about the time I’m counting the days until fall.
xo,
Karen

It’s so hard to leave our gardens in the summer, isn’t it, Jayne? Now happily retired, I’ve been able to postpone our travels until the garden season ends. This summer’s heat really hit your garden hard. What a bountiful tomato harvest though! In Illinois, we have been blessed with some cooler days, just perfect for working outside. Now the hot, sticky weather is here! Off to the garden now. Strong storms are expected this afternoon. It really feels like summer now! ♡

It’s heating up here as well, but we still get the cool nights and an occasional cool day so it’s nothing close to your weeks on end of heat.
The heat lovers like the elephant ears look great, they’re loving it, and the crinium bud looks promising!

Yes the crinum asiaticum is unfazed by the hot days. Most days now reach the upper 90’s but, thankfully, the humidity is still low and the evenings have a cool breeze

Could I grow a Blanche for you in my ny garden?

Hi Jayne, so nice to meet you and thank you for stopping by to visit and your kind comment.
We are very hot now too and without our daily watering nothing here in the lone star state would make it. Looks like your garden is doing pretty well even with the heat. I use a large umbrella and move it around the yard when the sun is scorching. It gives some relief to the blooms. Enjoyed your blog and post.
Have a great weekend.

I’ve seen peony growers using the umbrellas to protect blooms but had not thought of it for general use! Great idea!

Jayne, your garden is lovely, it’s so difficult to garden with this heat. Here in southern California, we have drought restrictions for watering, and sadly, as you wrote, some plants don’t fare well. But some are better than they’ve ever been before! Nature is a constant, exciting surprise, isn’t it?
