The last days of Summer should include quiet, casual dinners al fresco amid soft breezes and the quiet song of birds and insects! But when there is trouble in the dahlia beds, action must be taken, and quiet lovely dinners forsaken. We set the have-a-heart traps and baited with fresh cantaloupe and carrots. It took a day and a half, but look who liked what we were serving!
Off to the North country where a new home could be found and our dahlias would be safe from the voracious appetite! Did not even have time to plan the lovely al fresco dinner when we noticed the dahlias had been attacked again! What! The trap was set again. And look who came by this morning!
Please dont tell me this critter found his way back in just 48 hours????
Do you think it is the same beast? I think they look like two different animals! Well if it is a family, then we plan to reunite them in the same North country! And maybe, MAYBE I can concentrate on my own dining pleasures rather than the woodchuck’s!!!

So glad you caught them and then released them, I do hope no more turn up and that your dahlias can grow in peace!

I wonder if you can put a dab of pain in an inconspicuous spot so you can see wether it’s the same one, doesn’t need to last long, just 48 hours apparently! Do they dig the ground to get at the tubers? You could try still wire mesh netting around the base of the plant to protect the tuber but I guess they would find some way to get underneath it.
