The fourth of July week-end began with a fond farewell to a friend of many years who is moving to Dallas to work for a most interesting celebrity and intellect who speaks openly and is above all else a truly patriotic and deeply caring citizen of our country! Our friend is beginning a wonderful chapter of her life, but she leaves us a bit bereft…however, let the celebration begin!
I checked into my weekly snoop at Slim Paley‘s blog and she was setting up a bar. Good, I need a bar, so I put out some of the contenders:Believe me, after all was set up al fresco, it did not approach the perfection you will see on Slim’s post. I transported the bar to the lower level of the decks where guests would pour a drink and then make their way up to the third level in order to get to the food. This would be interesting after they had a glass or two of my Summer cocktail:
3 cups of orange juice
1 cup sparkling water
1 orange cut into slices
1/2 cup of Cointreau
2 cups of vodka
Rub rim of glass with lemon and dip into sugar. Pour over ice! (You can skip the rim of sugar after the first one!)
This was an impromptu gathering so there was not a lot of time for elaborate flower arranging. Glad to have the Hydrangea all in bloom! I have been collecting different varieties for years and propagating them year to year, so the collection has grown! Each year I try to visit the Hydrangea gardener, a very nice gent on Nantucket who is open by appointment or by luck at his small strictly hydrangea nursery! One of my favorites from him is Hydrangea ‘Mathilda Gutges”:
There are some that started out on the dining table from a florist, then got popped in the ground, and surprisingly survived:
Make room for a new hydrangea in your garden this Summer!
Happy Fourth of July to everyone!
